A methodology of intuition, or: Finding through thinking and doing intuition

Lisa Hofmann

2022-2024

This dissertation is discussing the development of a methodology of intuition in the form of a toolbox that is: generating, developing, and reflecting ideas as the seed for a creation, emerging from embodied knowledge, through a practice of listening. The aim of this artistic research is not only to become aware of my use of intuition, but to contribute with a definition of my use of intuition as a first step towards making this methodology accessible to other artist/makers. Following, I am proposing three steps emerging from self- and group-reflection on my (studio) practice: first, thinking intuition; second, doing intuition; and third, finding through thinking and doing intuition. With thinking intuition as a first step, I attempt to define my terms for doing intuition. Doing intuition in a second step, then, describes the tools of the toolbox emerging from these terms. The final toolbox consists of three tangible card decks as well as physical exercises and can be used inside and/or outside the studio.
