CAFÉ SUIKERLAND - TRANSFORMING ECHO CHAMBERS INTO POETIC ECOLOGIES OF RESONANCE

Maja von Kriegstein

2022-2025

In times of parallel public spheres, political radicalization and the hollowing out of democracy, the practice-led research Transforming Echo Chambers into Poetic Ecologies of Resonance strives to make a contribution to subvert that dynamic, with the aim of creating more permeable, resonant structures within the diverse body of a society.

This research is conducted in a three-pronged approach:
1. open field research in public places primarily in Arnhem, one of them being Café Suikerland in the neighbourhood of Malburgen, 2. a (self-) reflective practice of de-disciplining, and 3. the co-creation of a live performance event by an ensemble.

The practical work is grounded in theoretical writings from the fields of anthropology, sociology and media science as well as from sound art, music theory and theatre studies, with the double-sided key terms, “echo chamber” and “resonance,” encouraging playful experimental and interactions between both worlds.

Main findings include a number of new connective and hospitable practices, such as “Bridge Cycling”, “De-disciplined Theatre Space” and the creation of “Hospitable Scores”, the latter enabling composed and improvised forms of creation to coexist in one work.
