REIMAGINING POWER DYNAMICS: A NON-HIERARCHICAL APPROACH IN THE PROCESS OF PERFORMANCE MAKING

Niki Christoforidou

2022-2024

Reimagining power dynamics: A non-hierarchical approach in the process of performance making is the title of an artistic practice-based research project situated in the theatre field, devised theatre and performing arts. This research aims to explore how non-hierarchical structure and collaborative environment can affect the creative process of crafting a performance in contemporary theatre settings. This research was created in collaboration with an interdisciplinary team of five artists from my cohort, each bringing their unique
perspectives on the table.

This research is derived from my desire to explore egalitarian spaces within performance creation and to develop a methodology that incorporates care, attentiveness and collaboration throughout the process. By combining my methodology, studio practice and literature review, I aimed to reassess conventional hierarchical structures and propose a new horizontal approach to the performance creation.
Our approach was conducted by studio sessions where we would start by engaging with a structured breathing exercise, transition to playing theatre games, and then explore the Viewpoints method on the Grid practice. Also, part of the methodology was the act of sharing food and eating together as a form of care.

The present thesis not only proposes a theoretical framework but also offers a practical approach to implementing nonhierarchical structures during performance making. This approach, which reimagines the notion of hierarchy, explores possibilities as well as underscores the ethical concerns around this topic, ensuring the integrity of our work.
